Quarter 1 Week of Diabetes Clinical Trial / CER -Students will discover the importance of good communication, teamwork, and effective scientific practice. We will view part of a documentary that shows how scientists discovered insulin and came up with a way to treat Diabetes. Students will respond through discussion and the use of the CER ( Claim Evidence Reasoning) writing model. The Impossible Lab - Students will apply what they've learned about cooperation and thoughtful experimental design to solve an "impossible" problem. Week of Gizmo: Element Builder - Explore the structure of atoms by manipulating the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons. Use the interactive lab to discover the relationship of atomic structure and elemental organization on Periodic Table. Webquest: Intro to the Periodic Table: Students will explore the Periodic Table and discover how it's organized. Day #1 Links: Part 1 – Background Knowledge http://www.chem4kids.com/files/elem_intro.html Part 2 – What is the Periodic Table? http://www.chem4kids.com/files/elem_pertable.html Part 3 – Using the Periodic Table http://periodic.lanl.gov/default.htm Day #2 Links: Families - http://www.ptable.com/ Finished Early? Go to https://www.engineering.com/GamesPuzzles/tabid/82/Default.aspx Week of Periodic Table Guided Notes - Students be reinforce and strengthen their knowledge of the Periodic Table through lecture, discussion, and possible demonstrations. Coloring Coding the Periodic Table - Students will be identifying the groups and families of elements on the Periodic Table (Supplemental )Periodic Table Scavenger Hunt. Students look to discover unique elements and their properties using the periodic table. Element Practice Students will research two elements and discover their history, characteristics and uses. Periodic Practice http://periodic.lanl.gov/default.htm Hunting the Elements - Students will be viewing the NOVA program and discovering unique and interesting things about the elements that make up our world. *HONORS & COLLEGE PREP PROJECT- The Periodic Table of What?: Students will develop a periodic table of their choosing. Using the format outlined in the handout, they will define a topic, identify the families, and organize the components into a periodic table. Week Periodic Table Project Presentations Periodic Table Review Periodic Table Quiz Week Guided Notes Elements, Compounds, & Mixtures. Students will be able to differentiate between elements, compounds, heterogeneous mixtures, and homogenous mixtures through lecture, demonstration and guided notes. WebQuest: Elements, Compounds, Mixtures OH MY! Students will be able to differentiate between elements, compounds, heterogeneous mixtures, and homogenous mixtures. Students will need the following links to complete the WebQuest. They are in the same order as they are on your worksheet. Part 1: For Drawing - http://www.chemical.sg/el_mix_comp.html For Information - http://chemed.chem.purdue.edu/genchem/topicreview/bp/ch2/index.php#element Part 2: http://www.chem4kids.com/files/atom_compounds.html Part 3: http://www.chem4kids.com/files/matter_mixture.html Part 4 - http://www.chem4kids.com/files/matter_solution.html If you finish early.... You can play one of the following games: http://mint.ua.edu/games/chemical-mixup/ https://acswebcontent.acs.org/games/home_hunt.html http://www.quia.com/rr/33049.html http://www.quia.com/rr/41507.html Elements, Compounds & Mixtures Poem Students will read a poem and the subject and analyze the text for ways to differentiate elements, compounds, and mixtures. *SUPPLEMENTAL Elements, Compounds, Mixture Concept Map - Students will create a concept map that links together their knowledge of how we organize matter. (NO DOWNLOAD AVAILABLE) Elements, Compounds, Mixture/ Finding Out About Matter/ Periodic Table & Matter Vocabulary This practice exercise will help us review the concepts from the precious two units. Week of 9/30 Elements, Compound, and Mixture Lab - We'll apply what we've learned to identify elements, compounds, and different types of mixtures *Supplemental Practice-Mystery Mixtures- Students identify heterogeneous & homogeneous mixtures (download and complete for practice) Physical & Chemical Change Worksheet - Students identify the differences between physical and chemical change. Physical vs Chemical Change Guided Notes - Students will see demonstrations and be guided the differences between physical and chemical change Physical vs Chemical Change Study Jams & Worksheet; Students will complete the worksheet in class and review. A pop quiz will be given accompanying the activity *States of Matter Worksheet - Students will diagram and answer questions about the states of matter and how they change. * Phase Change Diagram - Students will create a diagram outlining the three phases of matter and the six ways they change. States of Matter Guided Notes - a brief lecture coupled with guided notes (DATE TBD)Dry Ice Demonstration & Lab -Demonstration and exploration of phase change, volume in density using dry ice. Gizmo: Phase Changes - Explore the relationship between molecular motion, temperature, and phase changes. Compare the molecular structure of solids, liquids, and gases. Graph temperature changes as ice is melted and water is boiled. Find the effect of altitude on phase changes. The starting temperature, ice volume, altitude, and rate of heating or cooling can be adjusted. Gizmo link SUPPLEMENTAL * Phase Change Diagram - Students will create a diagram outlining the three phases of matter and the six ways they change. States of Matter Guided Notes - a brief lecture coupled with guided notes QUARTER 1 EXAM Chemistry Test Quizlet & Kahoot - Students will participate in an interactive quizzes to help the review for the upcoming chemistry test.
